Crossings: A site-specific installation (with Yu-Wen Wu)
April 1 - May 1, 2016
Carleton College Perlman Teaching Museum, Northfield MN

We walk for the pleasure of wandering and thinking, for exercise, as a communal activity, to reach destinations and, in some circumstances, for survival.

It is impossible to avoid daily reports of the current global forced displacement of populations. In the UNHCR annual Global Trends Report: ”The number of people forcibly displaced at the end of 2014 had risen to a staggering 59.5 million. Indications from the first half of the year suggests 2015 is on track to see worldwide forced displacement exceeding 60 million for the first time.”

This installation calls attention to this global crises. Under boundless skies and beautiful landscapes are borders and fences. The numbering of rocks and the scrolling of numbers in the video underscores the staggering amount of refugees. How many steps must these people take to reach a place they can call home?
